The Z-Man. From its humble origin story to the legends of its super powers, the Z-Man is Kansas City's award-winning, accolade-achieving, superhero sandwich.

The chicken version of the Z-Man starts with a toasted Kaiser roll and a bit of Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que Sauce, then a pile of hand-rubbed, oak-smoked, pulled chicken breast is added, topped with smoked provolone and two crispy onion rings and some more sauce.

This kit contains all the ingredients you'll need to build eight heroic Z-Man sandwiches at home. Assembly instructions included.

Back in 1997, not long after Jeff and Joy opened their barbecue joint at 47th & Mission, a loyal customer named Mike Zarrick pitched a partnership. He was launching a sports talk show on 1510 AM and was passionate about Joe’s BBQ. Jeff took a chance on him—choosing passion over big media.

Months later, Jeff created a new sandwich: sliced smoked brisket, smoked provolone, crispy onion rings, and BBQ sauce on a Kaiser roll. He asked Zarrick to promote it with a name-the-sandwich contest.

But fans kept coming in asking for “that Z-Man” sandwich—Zarrick’s on-air nickname. The contest ended, but the name stuck. And that’s how the Z-Man was born.
